I spent the first seven years of healing desperately and doggedly trying to prove myself to all my family and peers. That ended up being a sad joke. We look at change and the journey in a simplistic way as if it really was as easy as walking up a flight of stairs. Sure, you’d get tired, but you were also always moving up. This is not how it really goes. It is probably a good thing we can keep such a narrow sight line because the reality of what is truly taking place inside one’s healing and re-learning journey is so much more ugly, long, and hard.
